The main attractions of the old town include the Royal Castle, the Market Square, and the old city wall, the Barbican. It is a good way to reach the old town by having a walk on Nowy Swiat Street which originates from the 16th century and where later wealthier and aristocratic residents built homes along the street. The street has a number of cafes and international shops. As the city is near the Vistula River and the river used to have large areas of the now built inland, nearly one-quarter quarter of the town includes parks and gardens. This means, that uniquely, you may almost walk through the entire capital from one park to another.
