Is Budapest Card Friendly

When travelling anywhere, there will always be some doubts about how best to deal with expenses. Despite being an EU member state, Hungary still uses Forint currency, which can lead to confusion.

If you are searching for cheap accommodation in Budapest for a short or long period, you might be wondering about how much cash you should take with you or what is the easiest way to exchange your currency for Forints and so on. Well, don't worry, this article has got you covered.

Currency exchange points and ATMs in Budapest

Let us introduce you to some basic information about the Hungarian currency. The exchange rate will depend on which currency you use in your home country, but to give you an overall idea, here's an average of what you can expect:
  • 1 EUR (euro) = 352.72 HUF (forint)
  • 1 USD (dollar) = 298.72 HUF (forint)
  • 1 GBP (pound) = 415.76 HUF (forint).
If you use cash, you will most often manipulate the banknotes in the values of
  • 500
  • 1 000
  • 2 000
  • 5 000
  • 10 000
  • 20 000
  • and more forints.
To foreigners, it might seem like large sums of money. Still, when you count the exchange rate, you will see Budapest is not precisely one of the most expensive cities in Europe.

You can exchange your money before taking take off, or you can easily use any ATM found in almost every corner of Budapest. Before visiting or moving to Budapest, you might want to check in with your bank about any possible fees or costs for exchanging money in Hungary or even using the ATM.

You may also exchange money in one of the local banks if it suits you better. Banks are open every weekday from 8 am is to 3 pm, while ATMs securely operate 24 hours a day.

Card Friendly

You should not have any significant problems with card payments in Budapest since it's the capital. However, there might be a few exceptions as in any other country you might travel to.

Many places such as restaurants, larger or smaller shops, petrol stations and spa facilities are very card friendly. However, there are still some establishments where payments with a debit or credit card will not be possible.

We recommend you to have some cash with you just in case, but we are confident that you won't have to stress too much about it during your trip to Budapest.
