Basic steps to be more sustainable

14. may 2021 · 2 minute
You know what is going on with the Earth right now, and you want to do your part in making it better. Great! But how do you go about it? Here are just a few practical and essential ways in which you can make your life more sustainable

Day to day life & sustainability

There are many ways you can change your day-to-day life to make it more sustainable. One big way is to recycle. Check out your city or town’s guidelines on recycling and start today. The best way to do this is to have a system – separate containers at home, allot specific days for taking the sorted rubbish out, etc. The sooner it becomes a routine, the easier it is to get it done.

Another simple way is to reduce the number of times you travel by car. If you commute from far away or there’s not easy public transport access, this might not be doable, but if you live in a city, there’s always the option to take public transport.

Another way to make your life more environmentally friendly is to turn vegetarian or vegan. But many people do not want to abandon their meat-eating habits. What you can do instead is lessen the amount of meat and animal products you eat every week – the so-called Mediterranean diet. See if you can change to plant milk or replace some paté or ham with vegan alternatives. If you cook at home, it’s easier to change, but there may be options for you at work as well, for example home-delivered low-carb meals.

Bigger changes towards sustainability

You may be vegan, use public transport and be the person who sorts out or reuses all the rubbish, but there is still a lot to be done. As mentioned in our article about the four types of sustainability, there are multiple ways to be sustainable, and each of them needs a different approach.

You can try and see what is needed in your community.

This could be your town, your neighbourhood, or even just your family. Ask how you can help your older relatives live more sustainable lives. Or join a group that cleans nature to help renew itself. But such action needs to go hand in hand with political action. Help spread the word on what is going on with the Earth, talk to people close to you and help them understand the urgency of the situation or join groups that directly advocate for sustainability.

Additionally, make sure to vote for political parties that work with sustainability and care about the environment. Lastly, you can look at your own business or employment and see whether or not it could be made more sustainable. Go online and see if there are some tips regarding your work – perhaps you might even be able to talk to your boss about sustainability.

In short, be creative, talk to people, and let yourself be inspired by reading more about sustainability. We are all talented and clever people, and this problem needs all of us to work together towards a better future.
