How to meet new people in Prague

For tenants · 5. november 2019 · 3 minute

We get it: you’ve just moved to Prague and now you’re eager to get all settled in – but that’s hard to do without having anyone to visit cool places and share your impressions with! At Flatio, we understand that figuring out how to make friends in a new city can be tough at first, so we’ve put together some useful tips to help you with just that!

How to make friends in Prague

Although you might feel a little lost at first, you’ll soon find that there are many ways to meet new people in Prague. To help you settle in as soon as possible, though, here are some places you can start.

Where to meet people in Prague

You’re in the Czech Republic, so it goes almost without saying that one of the easiest places to meet someone new are the local bars and pubs. If you pick a famous, busy pub like U zlatého tygra, for example, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll have to share a table with someone you can strike up a conversation with! Or, if you’d prefer something more low-key, head to Duende – the tables in this café/bar are quite close to one another, so saying hello to the people around you will come naturally.

Not really into alcohol? No worries, there are options for you too. For example, why not try tapping into your creative side at Muddum? This community art space offers various workshops in several different languages and is open to all skill levels, so whether you have previous experience with making art or not, this is a great way to meet new people!

How to meet people online

Meeting someone new can sometimes be a tough task, so you might want to cast your net wide and look online as well as offline. But worry not – Flatio is here to help with that too. If you’re on Facebook, a good place to start is the Expats in Prague Facebook Group. If you make a post saying you’re looking to meet new people, a few friendly souls will be sure to respond!

How to make friends in Prague

So, you now know where you might want to go to meet someone new. But just meeting someone and becoming friends with them are two different things, so here are some options you can try out to make sure your new acquaintance becomes your new friend.

Hobby clubs in Prague

One handy way of cementing those newly made connections is going to a hobby club together – and as a plus side, everyone else in those clubs will probably be pretty open to becoming your new friend, too! Think about what hobby is dearest to your heart, and then have a look whether there is a club for it in Prague. It’s a big city, so you’re bound to find something!

If you aren’t sure about where to start, though, why not try a group that teaches you something useful, like Prague Speakers, a Toastmasters International club aimed at developing your public speaking and leadership skills? You’ll make new friends and improve your skills at the same time – the perfect combination!

Social groups in Prague

Didn’t find a hobby club you like? No worries – another option is the various social groups in Prague, which usually focus on a specific group of people rather than a specific hobby. We already mentioned the Expats in Prague group, but there are many more! For example, if you and your new acquaintance are both women, or you just want to make more friends who are women, there is the International Women’s Association of Prague, which offers its members a wide variety of activities, from cultural events to charity work. But that’s just one option – a quick google search will probably reveal many other social groups you can join!

Websites for making friends in Prague

Having a hard time finding a hobby or social group you like? Then you should check out the Meetup website! It tells you which hobby or social groups exist in a given city, and gives you info about their upcoming meetups so that you can join in on the fun right away. Plus, Meetup also has its own app, so you can browse its offer of clubs even when you’re out and about. Super convenient!

This is only the tip of the iceberg, though – there is perhaps an endless number of ways to find a friend in Prague, and we can hardly hope to cover them all. Their infinite variety is up to you to discover, so get out there and meet people!

Did you need to know where to meet some people because of studies or working opportunities here in Prague? Maybe you will also need some kind of accommodation to help you settle down. And maybe you will also need some kind of student apartment or even something more luxurious. All apartments are fully furnished at Flatio!
