Should I prepare a tenant welcome package?

It’s a good practice in hospitality to offer a welcome letter to tenants as an owner, especially if you’re renting your place remotely and you will not be able to greet your guest in person. For those who are interested in using online platforms and services to manage their property, a welcome package is pretty much a necessity.

The letter explains the most important rules of the house, indicates what can be found where, how things work, and how to ask for more information or assistance. If you’re a beginner, keep in mind your tenant welcome letter will evolve with time - and it is normal to make a mistake and omit some important facts when you start.

A great example of tenant welcome letter would include a local map - since your guests will be most probably new to the city, or the area, you can show a bit of extra hospitality and care by marking some of your favorite spots on it. Is there a bar where they make the best whiskey sour in town you can recommend? A place with great contemporary art exhibitions? A gym you especially enjoy, or a cinema with peculiar programming for movie lovers? These little things will make your guests feel more at home.

Toiletries for a new tenant

Another simple element in your new tenant welcome package is toiletries. These provide more of a hotel-like experience and can include personalized items: soap, shower gel, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion, toilet paper, Q-tips, a sewing kit. It’s up to you to decide how much to provide.

Food & Drinks for new tenant

While working on your welcome letter for your new tenant, consider including information about water, tea, and coffee in the house. Decide whether you want to leave a box or two of good tea and coffee for them to use, make sure the kitchen has all the necessary tools to prepare these beverages, and explain if, and how, the tap water is ready to drink. You can also make a list of recommended places for coffee and tea around the area. And do remember adding some herbal and caffeine-free options!

Handwritten note

For those who enjoy traditional, and more personal, welcomings, a handwritten letter for your guests is a lovely gesture. Preparing and packing a beautifully written welcome package, whether for a commercial or regular tenant, will show the extra effort and care you put in hospitality you provide, and leaves a great impression immediately.
