Most Popular Universities in Budapest for Erasmus Students

5. october 2021 · 2 minute
Finding the right institution that will prepare you for a successful future is difficult. Each university offers a wide variety of courses and an even wider variety of topics and lecturers you can engage with. But finding one that is also fun and connects you to other people on top of that may almost seem impossible. To help you along the way, here are some of the most popular unis in Budapest.

ELTE

Eötvös Loránd University is one of the most well respected and internationally recognised schools in Hungary. This world-class institution has many famous alumni, including the current prime minister of Hungary, Victor Orbán. The university is one of the oldest in Hungary, and its more than 300-year tradition makes it an expert institution among its peers. With more than 4000 international students (about 11%), you can see this institution has attracted many people like yourself. This university is an excellent pick if you want to have a solid education during your Erasmus stay.

Budapest University of Technology and Economics

Shortened to BME, this institution has a long and proud tradition. Founded at the close of the 18th century, it is one of the oldest technological institutions globally and the oldest university in Europe that gives out engineering degrees. And the pedigree shows. Currently, almost two-thirds of Hungary’s engineers go through this school on their path for a career. You could hardly choose a university more tested by time than BME. The international student situation is not as great as at other institutions, only about 5% of all students (or about 1000 students). It’s still a lively international scene, and you can meet people from all over the world, but in class, you won’t have as many unique perspectives. If you’re pining for a solid engineering program in Budapest, this should be your choice.

Corvinus University of Budapest

This is an excellent pick for any international student, as the data shows since more than 3600 international students (20% of all students at the university) have picked this university. And no wonder. The institution provides courses in business administration, economics, and social sciences in French, German, English, and Hungarian, making it a perfect multicultural learning environment. As a mainly research-oriented institution, you will also gain great opportunities to stay teaching at the university or find work in the private sector. And if you’re looking for fun, nothing spells fun like a large pool full of international students, all sharing their experiences and cultures.

Semmelweis University

Focusing primarily on health and medical sciences, Semmelweis University is one of Hungary's largest and most prestigious universities. It is the alma mater of some of the leading medical professionals in Hungary and the rest of the world. The institutions’ careful coaching of students through its challenging program is only a part of its recipe for success. Despite its popularity with Hungarians, the school is almost one-third international students. Such a high number will make many of the classes much more exciting and the after parties that much wilder. If you study medicine, Semmelweis University should be on your Erasmus shortlist.

Budapest Business School

This school is the second oldest business university in the world, and it shows in its maturity. With the high quality of the lecturers' English language proficiency and the curriculum itself, this institution will look great on your CV. But it is also a great place to meet people. A student organisation called the “Xchange Group” organises events and trips outside of Budapest for Erasmus and international students. That also helps them with the administration part of studies. This is an all-around great place to go for your Erasmus, so make sure to check it out.
