Colombia Launches a Digital Nomad Visa

14. april 2023 · 2 minute

Colombia has announced the launch of a digital nomad visa that will allow foreigners to live and work remotely in the country for two years, Travel Tomorrow reports. The visa also provides access to a government-issued ID card that facilitates access to financial services and the establishment of businesses in Colombia.

The initiative is expected to attract at least 45,000 digital nomads to the country in the first 18 months, helping to strengthen the tourism sector and generate foreign exchange.

The proposal was presented by Ilana Milkes, CEO of Tech World, at Mobile World Congress after two years of working with the government agency Procolombia.

The move reflects the country's growing tech scene, especially in major cities such as Bogota and Medellin, and the increasing preference of digital nomads to choose Colombia as a destination.

Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia, which is part of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Tourism, said in a statement that Colombia is excited to offer digital nomads the opportunity to work in the world's second most biodiverse country.

"Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Cali, the Coffee Landscape, and other destinations offer a variety of coworking spaces and accommodations with specific programs developed for more extended stays where remote workers will have unforgettable experiences."

According to Colombia's Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies, the country has made progress in Internet and computer penetration, improving its Network Readiness Index faster than the world average.

Data Reportal's report shows promising prospects for Colombia's digital transformation between 2022 and early 2023, with Internet coverage at 75.7% and an increase of 1.5 million Internet users. In addition, fixed-line Internet connection speeds have increased by 34.40 Mbps.
