Most sustainable destinations in the Czech Republic

19. may 2021 · 2 minute
The planet is in dire need of being protected right now, but that does not mean that you cannot travel and see the world. One has to be careful about which places to visit and what to do once there. With that in mind, we put together some ideas for places in the Czech Republic that are sustainable both environmentally and socially and economically.

“Rock Towns”

Rock towns have nothing to do with music and everything to do with geology. Rock towns are large natural sandstone structures towering dozens of meters from the ground. They are the perfect destination for mountaineers and rock climbers as well as hikers. There are many such naturally occurring places in Czechia, such as Drábské světničky, Prachov Rocks, and famously the Adršpach Rock Town. Whether you want to practise your climbing skills or see the Czech Republic from up high, rock towns are the right place for you.

Protected landscape areas in the Czech Republic

Many places in the Czech Republic are so-called “protected landscape areas”, which means that they are areas of beautiful nature protected by the state. Usually, these places have restrictions on what you can do in them, such as no camping or picking flowers/mushrooms and so on. However, the trade-off for this is the opportunity to see Czechia’s untouched natural beauty. There are many places to visit, but definitely don’t miss out on Žďárské vrchy, Moravský kras, Český ráj, or Beskydy. Each of these has its unique feel and topography, so there’s plenty to explore.

Skanzens

Skanzens are a unique experience. They are recreations of historical countryside dwellings from Czech history. If you want to see how ordinary people used to live in the Czech lands, there is no better place than a skanzen. We recommend the skanzen in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, skanzen Modrá, and the skanzen Příkazy. All of these are a great place to unwind, learn something about Czech history and have an excellent eco-friendly outing. Who knows, perhaps you’ll get inspired by Czech ancestors towards living more sustainably.

Castles and Chateaus

The last recommendation that we want to give you is to visit castles and chateaus in Czechia. There are too many to count. Some are no more than romantic ruins perched atop tall peaks, some are splendid baroque estates, and some are closer to citadels. To name a few here is to leave off too many on this list, but the chateau in Lednice and Hluboká nad Vltavou cannot be missed. The historical ruin of a palace in Cheb is also worth a look. If you want to see how the rich lived in the old days, then Czechia can deliver that in spades.
