Portugal Is Launching Digital Nomad Visa, Ends Covid "State of Alert"

Portugal, already a popular destination among digital nomads, has announced a work visa specifically for this group of remote workers—a move that should give the country an even greater competitive advantage over many other destinations in Europe and beyond.

The new visa, as reported by Time Out, allows successful applicants to live and work in the country for up to 12 months. To qualify for the new visa, you must be employed by a foreign company and come from a country outside the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA).

Further details on the launch date of the new visa scheme, the minimum income required, and other requirements haven't yet been announced. Portugal has a long-running D7 Visa initiative in place, which is being used by international remote workers.

The visa allows anyone to live and work in the country if their monthly income is higher than Portuguese minimum wage (€705 per month).

Where the new visa differs, according to the report, is the fact that it's aimed at people who are willing to relocate temporarily without making a long-term commitment.

End of Covid "State of Alert"

In a separate development, the government ended the "state of alert" on October 1 in mainland Portugal, which had been imposed to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Wearing a mask is now only mandatory in hospitals and nursing homes. There will no longer be "Covid isolation periods" for people who test positive or "free" tests prescribed by SNS health authority hotline SNS24 or SNS doctors.
