What Are the Safest Countries to Relocate to in 2022?

1. april 2022 · 2 minute

Many people are going through a tough period in their lives right now. What can help is to relocate for a few months living abroad and take time to heal and rest up. But the last thing you want when finding your calm is to be in a dangerous or unsafe country. With that said, here are the top five safest countries in the world in 2022.

Denmark

The Economist’s Safe Cities Index of 2021 ranked Copenhagen as the safest city in the world. With a low crime rate, virtually no chances of natural disasters, great healthcare, and great plans for environmental safety, the whole country is one of the best places to live if you want to have a safe stay. It is no wonder Denmark ranks so high in happiness.

Portugal

Portugal ranked third out of 163 countries in the 2020 Global Peace Index, and second in Europe. Violent crime is a rare occurrence and mostly only happens in a few areas of Portugal, the country has great public healthcare, and within urban communities, LGBTQI+ people are accepted. There is a problem with thieves and scammers, especially in the capital, Lisbon, but if you keep your belongings close and your eyes sharp, you shouldn’t have a big problem.

Canada

Also in the top 10 of the Global Peace Index and with its city of Toronto sitting on the second spot in the Economist’s Safe Cities Index, Canada is one of the few non-European countries that is truly safe. Unlike its sister to the south, Canada has very strict gun laws, making the country much safer. Crime of all kinds is on the decline and publicly funded healthcare as well as infrastructure keeps everyone safe and sound. The only drawback is its climate, especially to the north, and the occasional dangerous wildlife.

Singapore

Placing third in the Safe Cities Index, Singapore has clamped down on its crime hard through, among other things, strengthening its gun laws. Violent crime is a rarity, and thanks to good healthcare and infrastructure, the daily life of its citizens and visitors goes on without large accidents. The city-state is also surprisingly environmentally conscious, with a plan to cut its waste sent to landfills by 30% and a large tree replanting effort.

Spain

Spain is another highly ranked country when it comes to safety, usually placing somewhere within the top 10%. Again, violent crime is all but gone though thieves and scammers are a well-known problem in larger cities of Madrid and Barcelona. Transportation is likewise safe, but outside of the city centres, the infrastructure is not always up to scratch. Urban areas are generally accepting of Queer people and the country is mounting an effort to fight climate change. Overall, Spain is just a great place to stay for a few months and enjoy a good time.
